Why Are Many Rear-end Shunts At Roundabouts?

Posted: 8/12/2018

Cars driving into the back of other cars are by far the most common type of road traffic collision.  So why do so many of these collisions occur at roundabouts?

This is certainly something we have noticed over the years that roundabouts seem to have a high incident of road traffic accidents often resulting in substantial damage and personal injuries.

What tends to happen is that the driver of the car behind the car ready to go on to the roundabout often starts to watch the roundabout instead of the car in front of them.  Typically that driver sees what they think is a good gap in the traffic and know that if they were first car to go they would be away.  They then move forward still watching to their right on the roundabout rather than the car in front.  Surprise surprise that car in front didn’t think the gap was as great as the person behind did and hasn’t moved! The result is that the car behind just drives into the back of the car waiting to join the roundabout.  It’s a common type of accident.

How to avoid accidents at roundabouts?

If you don’t want to be the driver causing one of these common accidents at roundabouts then it is a good idea to focus all your attention on the car in front of you and not on the roundabout until you are the very front car ready to go.
